Note Taking

Note taking is the practice of recording information captured from a transient source, such as an oral discussion at a meeting, or a lecture.

Some of the advantages of taking notes:-
  • Easy to sketch diagrams, charts, and make mind maps
  • Can arrange your notes however you want
  • Many different note taking methods
  • Easily customizable: color of paper, lined/unlined, etc.
  • Easy to highlight or emphasize new, interesting, controversial or confusing concepts
  • Ability to use common shorthand or non-standard characters
  • Writing forces immediate processing
  • Physically engages you in the subject material
I personally love to take notes during the lectures. :) But I know most students doesn't like it that much. The reason for me to like or love taking notes is, because I just love to keep on writing things that struck my mind at anytime. But most importantly if I don't take any notes, at the end of the day  I feel like I have not learn anything and I personally feel sad about it. :( it is kinda very weird I know but truly that is what goes in my mind when I look at my books.

When talking about note taking we find many different styles of note taking methods which has be introduced by different people.
The most commonly used note taking methods are as follow:-

  • Cornell Note taking method

    •  Mapping

    • Outline

The above mentioned note taking methods are the most commonly used methods by any effective note taker. All the above methods are very useful for any situation.

Moreover CUE WORDS (For example/ next/ first/ in addition/ in comparison/ briefly/ remember, etc.) has a major part when it comes to note taking. If the note taker is aware of the cue words used by the lecture it would be really easy for the person to remember and at the same time grasp the information very easily.

A great deal of LISTING is required from the note taker. If you are a bad listener it will be difficult when it comes to taking notes.

Further more it would be easy if the note taker has his/her own SHORT FORM of writing. The importance of this is if we start writing long paragraphs we wont be able to remember the whole sentence which the lecture said. So in this case using short forms would be really useful for the note taker

So if your trying to be an effective note taker be sure that your mind, hands and eyes are working at the same time. Because to be an effective note taker you should use all this skills together.
